Georges Binet
(1865 - 1949)
Binet was a student of Cormon and Raphael Collin, he exhibited in the Paris Salon from 1889 until 1939 and at l’Exposition Coloniale in 1906. He gained an honourable mention in 1899, a third-class medal in 1904, a second class medal in 1912 and was made Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur in 1937.
He found inspiration in the great 19th century impressionists, and in the atmosphere of the Seine and its estuary. He is noted for his depictions of the coast and scenes of modern, everyday life painted both in Paris and in Normandy. Poppies on the Coast combines bright blooms and a sense of open space for a dynamic and highly evocative composition. The beauty of the flowers, as well as boats in the background, with the sense of the sun reflecting off the water, draws the eye into this compelling composition.
