John Nost Sartorius

1759 – 1828

 

John Nost Sartorius was the most prolific member of the renowned Sartorius family, five successive generations of which were painters. John Nost Sartorius is best known for his sporting and hunting scenes. The present work, painted in 1789, depicts the Oatlands Stakes run in July of that year at Ascot.

 

Inscribed, bottom left:
