G. B. Newmarch

George B. Newmarch

(fl. 1827 - 1873)

This particular terrier, we can assume, was a favourite animal of G. Williams, whose name has been painted onto the collar of the dog. Dog portraits, such as this, are rare as portraits of prize winning livestock were more likely to be commissioned. This painting is also signed and dated, 1861.

Born in the North East of England, George Newmarch was widely acclaimed for his competent paintings of animals. He worked mainly in the North Country and Scottish borders. The book "Farm Animal portraits" published by The Antique Collectors Club in 1988 includes a number of examples of his work.
